MacGregor Point Day 2

Day 2 of our trip to MacGregor Point was mostly spent on the Old Shore Road Trail. It was actually a very easy trail to hike. It is actually meant to be a bike trail as well, so it's very well formed. It takes you along the coast of Lake Huron and runs for quite a distance. We didn't hike the entire trail, we went about 4km one way and then back to our campsite.

The main feature of the trail were the wetlands that sat between it and the lake. For those that don't know, wetlands are basically an area of land that's been water logged and creates a different ecosystem than areas surrounding it. For a more detailed explanation, here's the wikipedia link. Here the wetlands sit between the shores of Lake Huron and the rest of the trail. It's pretty interesting and makes for some different scenery than we're used to seeing on our hikes.

After a few kilometers, we stopped for lunch in one of the wetland areas. As usual, we had out main hiking lunch of Chef Boyardee. It was nice to be kind of between the lake and the rest of the forest. Though, it did end up being a bit chilly. After lunch we continued on the trail for a few more kilometres before deciding to turn back and head back to camp to setup for dinner and the rest of the night.

We had snack of instant noodles and then began to get ready for the night - getting dinner ready and getting the fire ready. While Zoe got the food ready I tried vainly to get the fire started. I think I was a little over confidant in my skills as a fire starter since I had gotten the fire started relatively easily the night before. Tonight, things were not nearly as easy. It got so bad that our neighbouring camper, seeing my ineptitude, walked over and offered me use of their torch and fire starters. This was embarrassing to say the least. I politely declined their offer with thanks and continued my feeble attempts at starting the fire. Eventually I was able to get it started. I learned a few things going through this ordeal. One is to keep the fire raised to start, on top of a couple of larger logs helped. And that it really isn't that easy to start a fire.
Food
Dinner....yum
With the fire finally started we were able to have our dinner. For tonight, we decided that we would try out some of the freeze dried foods from MEC. At this point we were planning a back country trip later that summer and we decided that it would be good to try out some of the foods that we would be bringing. The freeze dried meals actually turned out to be pretty decent, a little on the salty side, but not as bad as we had expected them to be. They were also very filling. And very easy and quick to make, just boil water, let them sit and eat. We relaxed after dinner and did some final cleanup before heading off to bed. The last day there was rather uneventful, just packing up and sadly leaving the campground for the drive home.
